H50: The ever-living ghost of what once was

Title: The ever-living ghost of what once was
Fandom: Hawaii Five-0
Rating: PG
Genre: Gen, angst, friendship
Characters: Kono, mentions of Danny, Steve, Chin
Spoilers/warnings: Implied abuse
Length: 300
Disclaimer
: Don’t own. Title comes from Band of Horse’s “No One’s Gonna Love You”
Notes: Written for the new prompt “Scar” over at the drabble community [livejournal.com profile] hawaii_5_0_100 . It’s like the mods read my mind--I’ve had this idea in my head for awhile. There may be more to this later; not sure yet.

Summary
: Scars tell stories; Kono’s not sure she wants to know this one.

Scars tell stories.

Kono thinks of that every time she catches sight of the knife scar on Chin’s chest or the gunshot scars on Steve’s leg and lower back. Those scars attest to the dangers the two have encountered. They’re scars of strength and survival.

Kono’s got her own scars as well. When she was in high school, she and her friends liked to compare scars. Most of them were small, results of wipe outs, klutziness, or just plain stupidity. It had been like a twisted competition: the longer the scar, the greater the glory.

Then she’d blown out her knee and had three surgeries to fix it, and suddenly her scars weren’t about glory any more. No, those scars tell the story of her broken dreams. They’re scars of failure.

And then there’s Danny’s scars.

Kono has only seen Danny’s scars once; even when Five-0 is taking time off to relax at the beach, he’s usually wearing a shirt. But after one particularly messy case that ended with all of them falling into an open sewer, they’d been forced to strip down to their undergarments and hose off at HQ.

As she’d stood shivering under the stream of water, Kono had stared with wide eyes at the crisscross pattern of long, twisted scars on Danny’s back. There’d been at least a dozen, maybe more. Steve and Chin had noticed the marks as well and wanted nothing more than to take a crack at whoever had caused them, judging by the looks Kono had seen on their faces.

But Danny’s never said a word, and no one on the team has ever asked about them, so the origin of those scars remain a secret.

Scars tell stories, Kono knows, but she’s not sure she wants to know this particular tale.

End.

I admit, the first thing that attracted me to this piece was the title. I just started listening to Band of Horses a month or so ago, and I've always been struck by the cryptic simplicity of their lyrics.

And then I saw it was you and I was even more eager to read.

And I was not disappointed. I love that you have Kono's voice telling the story--she's probably the one I'd be least likely to write from--and you have her down so well. I love the insights into what the scars say about each person and that Danny's are still a mystery. Which fits so well with the show so far since he's still the one who somewhat keeps himself at a distance.

Of course, this little snippet makes me want more. Any chance we'll get the real story behind the scars?

Aww, thanks so much, friend! That means a lot to me, coming from you. :) Glad you liked it! (And I agree, Band of Horses has some very powerful but simple songs.)

And yes, I'm thinking of trying to develop a story that expands on this. Any chance you'd be interested/have the time to help me out? I think if I had someone to bounce ideas off of (and maybe to actually write with), I'd be far more likely to get something out. :D

I'd love to help you out in any way I can! Do you have my email address? I honestly can't recall :)

[identity profile] moogsthewriter.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 02:48 am (UTC)(link)
Sweet! That'd be awesome. :D And I must have had your e-mail at one point, because I know you helped me beta something for SPN once, but I don't think I have it any more. But you can e-mail me--mine's just moogsthewriter@hotmail.com. ^_^

Scars tell stories, Kono knows, but she’s not sure she wants to know this particular tale.

Ooh, but I do! I echo [livejournal.com profile] faye_dartmouth, will we hear any more about this particular backstory?

[identity profile] moogsthewriter.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 02:33 am (UTC)(link)
Hee, yes, I think you probably will. Won't make any guarantees, but it's quite likely. :)

Wow... You sure know how to pack a punch. That was really intense and so well written. I loved Kono's voice!
Any chance of a back story to this? Because those sound like he was whipped. And I'm just a sucker for H/C and team love.

[identity profile] moogsthewriter.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks so much! I'm so glad you liked it. And yes, I think I probably will have a back story to this. (And I'm also a sucker for H/C and team love, so I'll write it every chance I get. ^_^)

Oh my. I'm SO intrigued now. :D

That was really well done! I loved it.

[identity profile] moogsthewriter.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks so much! :D I'm glad you enjoyed it.

I loved this so much. Poor Danny. I also love that Steve and Chin wanted to go after whoever hurt him. That's sweet.

[identity profile] moogsthewriter.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 02:35 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks, hon! I'm glad you liked it. :D

[identity profile] kitmerlot1213.livejournal.com 2010-10-18 02:28 pm (UTC)(link)
Very thought provoking.

Can I ask, do you have Danny being a victim of child abuse or are his scars from a cop related incident?

Great work :)

[identity profile] moogsthewriter.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! Glad you liked it.

And you can ask, but I'm honestly not sure of the answer. I go back and forth between the options... right now, I'm leaning more toward a cop-related incident, but there's something powerful about a guy who comes from an abusive home situation and not only thrives but works hard to be a fantastic father.

...What are your preferences? :D I'll take all the ideas I can get.

[identity profile] kitmerlot1213.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 12:06 pm (UTC)(link)
I am with you on loving the idea of Danny's coming from an abusive home and being determined that his daughter would have a better childhood then he did.

[identity profile] moogsthewriter.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Fair enough. I'll keep that in mind. :) I woke up this morning leaning toward it being an on-the-job thing, but who knows what tomorrow's going to be like? ^_^ Curse my wish-washy muse...

[identity profile] devon99.livejournal.com 2010-10-18 06:05 pm (UTC)(link)
Fab stuff, although I am so intrigued now!!

[identity profile] moogsthewriter.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 02:37 am (UTC)(link)
Thanks! :) That seems to be a common reaction... I'm thinking I'll have to write a little more. :D

[identity profile] les342.livejournal.com 2010-10-18 06:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You're writing H50 fic! Awesome! I've read and really enjoyed your Star Trek fic, so I'm happy to see you writing for what's definitely become my latest fandom obsession too.

As for the fic, wow! So much emotion packed into just a few hundred words. Impressive! Also, I'm with those who've said they would like to read more. Kono may not want to know the story behind them, but I sure do.

[identity profile] moogsthewriter.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 02:38 am (UTC)(link)
Aww, thanks! I'm glad you enjoyed it. :D And I think I'll have no choice but to write more... otherwise the readers may rise up and revolt. ;)

Very interesting and intriguing story, I love you played it out. Is there any chance of a backstory for this '.'?

[identity profile] moogsthewriter.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Glad you liked it! :D And while I won't make any guarantees, I think there's a pretty good chance there'll be more in this particular story line, so keep your eyes peeled!

Great drabble! Thanks for sharing it with us! ^^

[identity profile] moogsthewriter.livejournal.com 2010-10-19 02:40 am (UTC)(link)
You're welcome! :D Thanks for the feedback!

[identity profile] aori-tsuki.livejournal.com 2010-10-20 06:24 am (UTC)(link)
Oh ow, that drabble was lovely. Hopefully we can see an expanded universe for this :)

This was really well written. I love the fact that there is mystery around Danny. He's the loudest and most vocal of the team, yet there's so much we don't know about him. This is an interesting foray into what could be a very interesting past. I truly hope you will enlighten us with the story of those scars. Again, very well done.

Thought you might like to know
your fic The ever-living ghost of what once was has been recced HERE (http://community.livejournal.com/h50_rec_room/2766.html)

oh man i really hope you add to this. the idea of Danny coming from such a screwed up home and still being an amazing father is great.

[identity profile] la-mariane.livejournal.com 2011-06-25 08:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I read your fic thanks to the rec over at the H50 rec room. I wonder what happened to Danny. You need to write another fic, where, for some reason, Steve and the team learn about it. And Steve and Chin could go talk to someone, and the team could comfort Danny.

I just realised I sound like a pushy H/C addict ...
